Running of bulls event planned for Minnesota

Event planners are waving a red sash, hoping to lure a Spanish-style stampede to Shakopee.

Organizers of The Great Bull Run say they have chosen Canterbury Park as one of 10 sites around the nation to host a running-of-the-bulls event, a 102-year-old Pamplona, Spain, tradition famous the world over for ending in multiple injuries – to both humans and animals – and on occasion, participant deaths.

The event is planned for May 10, 2014, and advance tickets can be purchased for as little as $35, although contracts are not signed and the event is not a done deal just yet, the Star Tribune reports.

About 5,000 people have signed up for the first U.S. bull run, scheduled for Aug. 24 at a drag-racing strip near Richmond, Va., the Star Tribune reports, and Canterbury officials plan to gauge the event's safety and success.

Runners would navigate a quarter-mile section of track at Canterbury, which would offer escape routes along the way, the Star Tribune reports. Organizers say the bulls would be released in waves of six at a time, for the safety of animals and participants, the Associated Press reports.

Bull runs traditionally have been controversial, and animal rights groups often object, USA Today reports. But Shakopee Mayor Brad Tabke said he would welcome it if Canterbury officials are comfortable with it and believe it is safe, the Star Tribune reports.

Is a Shakopee bull run a good idea? No, say a majority who have responded to an online unscientific Star Tribune poll.
