'Shocking and embarrassing': Women's soccer match ridiculed for tiny field

A woman's soccer match held at the home of the Minnesota Twins' Triple-A team has become a national laughing stock.

Why? Well, take a look at the field.

The National Women's Soccer League match between Western New York Flash and Seattle Reign was moved from nearby Sahlen's Stadium because a "90s Throwback" concert was being held there, and Frontier Field stepped in to host the match.

Frontier Field is home of the Twins' top minor league team, the Rochester Red Wings, but their field is pretty small and as a result the soccer pitch drawn on the field was pretty small as well.

Just 58 yards wide as it turns out, the Guardian reports, which meets FIFA (the world soccer body) guidelines but is less than the 70 yard minimum the NWSL wants.

The game attracted the attention of the U.S. Women's Team star Carli Lloyd, who on Twitter called it "shocking and embarrassing."

Her fellow national player Alex Morgan had her say too.

Equalizer Soccer reports that previous soccer matches held at the stadium have overlapped into the baseball diamond, allowing it to be full size, but this time it stayed off the diamond.

NWSL commissioner Jeff Plush later admitted it was the wrong decision to sign off on the pitch, saying the league did not "ensure the integrity of the game is always respected both on and off the field."
