Olympics: US women's soccer sent packing in major upset by Sweden

A gripping 120 minutes of soccer resulted in the first ever shootout in the history of the women's tournament at the Olympic Games – and the final result was the reigning champions from the United States going home early.

Sweden beat the United States 4-3 in a shootout, with the winning goal coming down to the final kick. It ends America's streak of three straight Olympic gold medals.

The game was scoreless at the half and remained so until Sweden snuck a shot past Hope Solo in the 61st minute. The US tied the scored 1-1 on a goal from Alex Morgan at the 78-minute mark.

And then things got crazy

The Americans appeared to win the game at 114-minute mark in the second period of extra time when Carli Lloyd headed a ball into the back of the net, but it was waived off when officials ruled that Lloyd was offsides. And less than a minute later Sweden had a goal waived off by an offsides call. But the replay showed that Sweden was clearly onside.

Had Sweden's goal counted, the game would have ended and Team USA's pursuit of gold, much less any medal, would have ended.
