Six schools leaving Tri-Metro Conference in 2014-15

With the Tri-Metro Conference expanding last week to the size the NCAA's Big East once was, six of the conference's teams are deciding that size matters in enrollment between the schools..

The Minnesota State High School League added Columbia Heights, Fridley, and Holy Angels last week, schools that would immediately be around the top of the conference in enrollment when they joined in 2014-15.

Blake, Breck, Minnehaha Academy, Mounds Park Academy, Providence Academy, and St. Paul Academy put their foot down today, exiting the Tri-Metro following the school year, with no real plan for what to do next.

Providence has said they will remain independent for flexibility purposes, while its still up in the air what the other five plan to do. Forming a new conference is one option, but it was not immediately clear if the schools were planning to make that move.

It became clear that the schools that decided to exit are concerned with being on the smaller end of enrollment, competitive imbalance stemming from that, and scheduling issues.

The remaining schools in the Tri-Metro are Brooklyn Center, Concordia Academy, DeLaSalle, St. Anthony, St. Croix Lutheran, St. Agnes, Visitation, and the three schools that will join next year, Fridley, Columbia Heights, and Holy Angels.
