Skate with the greats: Miracle on Ice fantasy camp planned

Fans of what Sports Illustrated called the "Top Sports Moment of the 20th Century" will be able to return to the scene of the triumph for a unique sports fantasy camp.

Thirty-five years after the heart-stopping, goosebump-raising, throat-straining USA Olympic gold medal-winning victory, the 1980 U.S.A. Hockey Team Miracle on Ice Fantasy Camp is planned in March of 2015 in Lake Placid, New York.

The Associated Press report the on-ice activities for the event will take place on the 1980 rink, since renamed Herb Brooks Arena. That's the same place where the underdog U.S. team stunned hockey squads from the USSR and Finland to earn Olympic gold.

Camp attendees will skate with and receive instruction from legendary team members, including Mike Eruzione, Neal Broten, Dave Christian, John Harrington, Steve Janaszak, Ken Morrow, Mike Ramsey and Buzz Schneider.

The price for the five-day camp is $5,495. The cost includes 1980 replica jerseys and autographed equipment and photos. The camp starts in Lake Placid on March 29.

The game continues to hold a place in the hearts of many hockey fans. A 2012 story about player memories of the victory that was carried in USA Hockey is headlined, "It Never Gets Old."

The “Miracle On Ice” team had a strong Minnesota component, with 13 of its 20 players born in Minnesota. Coach Herb Brooks, a Minnesota native, had coached the University of Minnesota Golden Gopher hockey team to three NCAA National Championships leading up to the Olympics.
