Skates don't crash me now: Crashed Ice hopefuls audition in St. Paul

Its promoters say Crashed Ice was invented when some Scandinavian daredevils tried skating down a bobsled run. It's been refined a little since then, but you get the idea. It's extreme.

But 400 skaters who converged in St. Paul Sunday were extremely motivated to try the sport. The Pioneer Press reports on their adventures skating under grates, around pylons, and over obstacles as they hoped to qualify for a spot on the 1,300 foot track under construction alongside the St. Paul Cathedral.

The event made its U.S. debut in St. Paul last year and nearly 100,000 spectators gawked at the three-day spectacle. The extremity is back this year and it coincides with the St. Paul Winter Carnival. Organizers say this year's version of the course will be longer and steeper.

The sport is officially known as "ice cross." But the tour that's coming to Minnesota is part of a series of events sponsored by Red Bull, which developed the Crashed Ice moniker.
