Sloppy defense costs Twins in 4-3 loss to Tigers

A couple of sloppy plays by right fielder Oswaldo Arcia, including one in the bottom of the ninth inning, cost the Twins the game Sunday afternoon against the Tigers at Comerica Park in Detroit. The Tigers won 4-3 and took two of three from the Twins in the weekend series, MLB.com reports.

The score was tied 3-3 when the Tigers came up to bat in their half of the ninth inning. Arcia dropped a long fly ball by Victor Martinez at the right-field fence, which allowed Torii Hunter to get from first to third base. J.D. Martinez hit a short sacrifice fly and brought Hunter home for the winning run, the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports.

Hunter led off the ninth with a single off Twins reliever Casey Fien (3-3), who was tagged for the loss.

Arcia's miscue wasn't his first of the day. In the first inning, he lost Martinez's high fly ball in the sun, and it fell for a double that allowed Ian Kinsler to score the game's first run.

The Twins battled back from a 2-0 deficit to take a 3-2 lead in the sixth. Joe Mauer hit a ground-rule double into the seats down the right-field foul line, and Josh Willingham brought him home on another double. A single by Kendrys Morales allowed Willingham to score, and then Kurt Suzuki singled in Morales for the third run of the inning, according to MLB.com.

The Tigers responded with a run in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game.

Twins starter Ricky Nolasco allowed nine hits and three runs over 5 1/3 innings.

Minnesota travels to Boston for a three-game series against the Red Sox in Fenway Park beginning Monday. The Twins are in last place in the American League Central, five games behind Detroit.
