Someone stole Roger Maris' coveted Hickok Belt from a Fargo museum

Someone broke into a Fargo museum early Tuesday morning and stole a rare trophy.

The Roger Maris Museum honors the baseball player and Minnesota native.

One of the museum's prized possessions has been the Hickok Belt – an award given to the "top professional athlete of all sports."

Maris won it after he hit his 61st home run of the season, breaking Babe Ruth's record.

But around 2:15 a.m., a car showed up outside West Acres Mall, where the museum is located, the Forum reports. A person ran out, smashed the museum's entrance, ran to a display case, smashed that too, then grabbed some items and left.

Mall Property Manager Chris Heaton said in a news conference that an alarm sounded and security responded. However, the thief had fled. The incident was caught on camera, though.

Investigators tell Valley News Live that they think at least one other person was involved in the incident. That's because camera footage seems to show the burglar getting into the passenger seat of a car before riding away.

Officials are trying to figure out who is responsible.

The original Hickok Belts have a jeweled, solid gold buckle and are worth up to $140,000.

Other winners of the "ultimate sports prize," as the award is called, include Muhammad Ali, Mickey Mantle, and Arnold Palmer.

The belt started in 1950 and was awarded until 1976. It was discontinued until 2013 when LeBron James earned it. Since, Madison Bumgarner and Steph Curry have been honored with it.
