Emily Shilson has a chance to become the first girl to win a match at the Minnesota boys' state wrestling tournament.

The sophomore from Centennial High School, who wrestles in the 106-pound weight class, was the runner-up in the Section 4AAA tournament over the weekend. The top two finishers in each section qualify for the state tournament.

Shilson is the second female to reach the boys' tournament. She could become the first to win a match.

Her first-round opponent at the state tournament later this week is Sartell-St. Stephen junior, Patrick Hesse, according to TrackWrestling.com.

The only other girl to qualify for the boys' tournament was Elissa Reinsma of Murray County Central in 2009 and 2011. Reinsma wrestled in Class 1A, whereas Shilson is going against 3A competition.

Centennial coach Steve Johnson told the Quad Community Press that "we’re going to try to get that first win by a girl at state."

“It’d be cool to make history like that,” Shilson told KARE 11.

Her older brother, Tyler, also qualified for the state tournament.

The team and individual state tournaments run Thursday to Saturday at Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.

Shilson is already a national champion with USA Wrestling.
