St. Cloud State's Nic Dowd in final 3 for Hobey Baker

The Hobey Baker Memorial Award Foundation announced today that St. Cloud State senior forward Nic Dowd is one of three finalists for the 2014 Hobey Baker Memorial Award.

St. Lawrence senior forward Greg Carey and Boston College junior forward Johnny Gaudreau are the other finalists.

Minnesota Golden Gophers goalie Adam Wilcox didn't make the final three, although he was named one of ten finalists last week. Wilcox is only a sophomore, so there's a chance he'll be back on the list in the future.

Last Friday, Dowd scored the winning goal in an overtime thriller against Notre Dame at Xcel Energy Center in the West Regional semifinals of the NCAA tournament. St. Cloud State lost the next day, 4-0 to the Gophers. Minnesota is set to renew its rivalry with North Dakota in the Frozen Four on April 10.

Dowd captained the Huskies to the first ever NCHC regular season title and was named First Team all-conference, Defensive Forward of the Year and Scholar-Athlete of the Year in the NCHC. He signed a contract with the Los Angeles Kings on Monday.

Gaudreau is considered a heavy favorite to win the award. He's a scoring machine, averaging nearly two points per game this season. He was a Hobey Hat Trick finalist last year as well. The award, though, was given to St. Cloud State's Drew LeBlanc.

The winner of the Hobey Baker is decided based on specific criteria, including "outstanding skills in all phases of the game, strength of character on and off the ice, sportsmanship and scholastic achievements."
