St. Johns beats Tommies in MIAC rivalry

St. John's upset of St. Thomas at O'Shaughnessy Stadium highlights a busy week of football in the M.I.A.C. this week. All three of our featured contests were close, including the Johnnies-Tommies contest.

Johnnies hold on to get big road win over St. Thomas

Paul Graupner's 32 yard field goal sailed wide left and St. John's held on for a dramatic 20-18 win over St. Thomas Saturday afternoon at O'Shaughnessy Stadium in St. Paul.

Four turnovers also hurt the #2 ranked Tommies in the loss.

Sam Sura rushed 22 times for 91 yards and a touchdown to lead the Johnnies, while Connor Bruns also had a touchdown on the day. Johnny receiver Josh Bungum finished with 11 catches for 97 yards as well.

St. Thomas quarterback Matt O'Connell completed 13 of 24 passes for 175 yards for a touchdown and an interception.

St. John's (3-0) remains unbeaten they will host Concordia next week. The Tommies (2-1) are off next week.

Augsburg rallies to beat Gustavus

Two touchdown second half touchdown passes from Ayrton Scott brought Augsburg from a 16-6 deficit to win 19-16 over Gustavus (1-1).

Scott connected with Joey Sonnenfeld on a 10-yard touchdown strike to cut the deficit to four. Then Scott did it again in the fourth quarter as he found Phil Putratz on a 46-yard connection, to give Augsburg the lead. Putratz finished with five catches for 104 yards and the touchdown.

The defense held up and Augsburg (2-0) went on for the victory.

The loss spoiled a great effort from Gustavus running back Jeffrey DuBose. DuBose ran the ball 37 times for 227 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

Augsburg (2-0) hosts Hamline next week. Gustavus (1-1) will take on St. Olaf.

Late rally falls short for St. Olaf as Cobbers win

Three different Cobbers rushed for touchdowns, and Concordia held off a late rally from St. Olaf to secure a 33-29 win on Saturday in Moorhead to hold on to the troll.

Griffin Neal, Domenic Fraboni, and Brandon Zylstra all found the end zone helping to lift the Cobbers.

Neal turned in another all around solid performance as he was 17 of 27 for 180 yards passing, then added another 83 yards rushing to lead the Cobbers to the win.

Nate Penz tried to keep St. Olaf close, he completed 18 of 28 passes for 261 yards including a 70 yard touchdown pass to Jake Schmiesing late, but it wasn't enough.

The Cobbers (3-0) travel to Collegeville to take on St. John's next week, while St. Olaf (1-2) will meet up with Gustavus.
