St. Paul Central football forfeits 2 games for ineligible player

St. Paul Central's varsity football team has forfeited two games for using an ineligible player, the Star Tribune reports.

The school's principal, Mary Mackbee, told the Pioneer Press that a player was deemed ineligible due to a clerical error that listed the student as a sophomore instead of a junior who wasn't on track to graduate.

"We wanted to make sure that we handled this mistake professionally," Mackbee told the Pioneer Press. "As soon as we found out we called the state high school league and followed the procedures to contact the other schools."

Central was 6-0 and ranked No. 5 in the latest Class 5A poll, according to MNFootballHub.com. The forfeits – games against Minneapolis North and Minneapolis Southwest – drop the Minutemen to 4-2 and the loss to North, a Class 1A team, hurts them in the state's official points system.

Teams are awarded more points, or can lose more points, when playing a larger or smaller school.

Claims of ineligible players just prior to the start of the prep football season led to the resignation of East Ridge coach Mike Pendino. East Ridge was forced to vacate wins, conference titles and section titles in 2013 and 2014.

Central hosts St. Croix Lutheran this Friday at 7 p.m.
