Zane McIntyre was the best goalie in NCAA Division I hockey at the University of North Dakota last season.

McIntyre, a native of Thief River Falls, Minnesota, is forgoing his senior season at UND to sign with the Boston Bruins. According to the university and the Bruins, McIntyre signed a two-year, entry-level contract.

He said leaving school early to pursue his NHL dream was "the most difficult thing I’ve had to do in my life," Comcast SportsNet reports.

After being named Minnesota's top high school goalie (Frank Brimsek Award) in 2010, McIntyre went on to star at UND. As a junior last season, he led the nation with 29 wins and helped UND reach the Frozen Four, where it lost in the semifinals.

He was part of the "Hobey Hat Trick," better known as one of three finalists for the Hobey Baker Award. He didn't win the Hobey, but he was named the best goaltender in the country with the Mike Richter Award.

McIntyre was drafted by Boston 145th overall (sixth round) of the 2010 NHL Entry Draft.

The Grand Forks Herald observes that McIntyre will attend Bruins training camp this fall. If he doesn't make the team he'll play for Boston's American Hockey League affiliate in Providence, Rhode Island.
