State Basketball: Semifinals set in 4A, 3A, 2A; top seeds win

Day one of the 2014 State Boys' Basketball Tournament is history as the semifinals are now set in Classes 4A, 3A and 2A. All of the No. 1 seeds in each class advanced. Here's a summary of the action. The Pioneer Press has an outstanding photo gallery right here.

Class 2A

All five starters for top-seeded Annandale scored in double-figures as the Cardinals won a close game against unseeded New London-Spicer, 77-70. Annandale will meet No. 4-seed Caledonia in the semifinals. The Warriors used 10 first-half 3-pointers to fuel a 73-53 rout over No. 5-seed St. Paul Academy and Summit School.

In the other half of the bracket, No. 2-seed Esko needed overtime to top East Grand Forks, 57-54. The Eskomos and Fairmont, which defeated St. Peter by a score of 58-54, will meet in the semifinals.

Class 3A

DeLaSalle, the No. 1-seed in Class 3A and two-time defending champion, overpowered upstart St. Paul Central, 81-48 at Williams Arena. Sacar Anim led the Islanders with 21 points while Stanford-bound big man Reid Travis poured in 20 points. Orono held off Marshall, 77-72. The Spartans and Islanders will meet in the semifinals.

In the other half of the bracket, No. 2-seed Austin fended off a big comeback effort by Alexandria and went on to win, 61-50. Here's a great photo gallery of the game courtesy of the Austin Daily Herald. No. 3-seed Holy Family Catholic toppled Cloquet, 63-41. Holy Family's 6-foot-11 center Justin Dahl scored 15 points and pulled down 11 rebounds. Austin and Holy Family Catholic will play on Thursday.

Class 4A

Top-seed Hopkins held off Tartan with a 70-58 win. According to the Star Tribune, Hopkins guard Kamali Chambers led all scorers with 21 points. Hopkins advances to play Shakopee, which pulled a slight upset over No. 4-seed Osseo, 54-51. Evan Hagen hit the go-ahead jumper for the Sabres with 42 seconds left in the game.

In the other half of the bracket, Mr. Basketball finalist and Xavier-bound guard J.P. Macura scored 23 points to lead No. 2-seed Lakeville North over Buffalo, 59-47. North will play No. 3-seed Cretin-Derham Hall, which advanced with a 69-53 victory over St. Francis. The Raiders are red-hot after upsetting top-ranked Tyus Jones and Apple Valley in the section playoffs.

11 a.m. — Park Christian vs. BBE at Williams Arena
1 p.m. — Fond du Lac Ojibwe vs. Canby at Williams Arena
3 p.m. — Red Lake vs. Maranatha Christian Academy at Williams Arena
5 p.m. — ACGC vs. Rushford-Peterson at Williams Arena

Class 2A Semifinal Schedule — Friday, March 14
6 p.m. – Annandale vs. Caledonia at Target Center
8 p.m. – Esko vs. Fairmont at Target Center

Class 3A Semifinal Schedule — Thursday, March 13
12 p.m. – DeLaSalle vs. Orono at Target Center
2 p.m. – Austin vs. Holy Family Catholic at Target Center

Class 4A Quarterfinals Schedule — Thursday, March 13
6 p.m. – Hopkins vs. Shakopee at Target Center
8 p.m. – Lakeville North vs. Cretin-Derham Hall at Target Center
