State Hockey: Class A semifinals set after day 1 of state hockey tourney

Breck rolls over Mankato West

Second-seeded Breck flashed its skill and dominance in an 8-0 blowout win over unseeded Mankato West in the opening game of the Class 1A quarterfinals today.

William Blake led Breck with a true hat trick, scoring 3 times in the second period; Chase Ellingson added a hat rick of his own, scoring once shorthanded, once on even strength and once on the power play.

Thief River Falls takes out Princeton

Thief River Falls also showed why they were a high seed heading into the tournament, handily beating Princeton 6-1 in game two.

Senior Forward Ethan Johnson broke Thief River Falls' record for goals scored in the season, tallying his 49th of the year in the third period to cap off a hat trick that started with back-to-back goals in the first. Jake Oakes scored Princeton's only goal in the 2nd period off an assist from Hunter Orrock and Lake Glasser.

Thief River Falls will play Breck in the Semi-Final game tomorrow morning at 11:00am.

Hermantown rolls over Litchfield/Dassel-Cokato

The top seed in the Class A hockey tournament Hermantown had no trouble in the Class A quarterfinals as they skated to an 11-3 victory over Litchfield/Dassel-Cokato Wednesday night.

Cole Koepke led the way for Hermantown, he finished the game with four goals and a pair of assists, while Jesse Jacques scored twice for the Hawks. Ryan Sandelin chipped in with four helpers and a goal of his own.

The Hawks controlled the ice outshooting the Dragons 43-27.

David Raisanen had a pair of goals in the loss for Litchfield/Dassel-Cokato.

St. Paul Academy squeaks out a battle with St. Cloud Cathedral

Devlin McCabe scored the game-winner at the 11:55 mark of the third period to lead St. Paul Academy to a 4-2 victory over St. Cloud Cathedral

It was McCabe's second goal of the night.

The goal capped off a night the Spartans controlled the ice. St. Paul Academy outshot the Crusaders 43-14 in the game, but Crusader goaltender Keegan Karki made 39 saves to give Cathedral a chance.

Logan Neu led the Crusaders with two goals, but it wasn't enough.

St. Paul Academy advances to face the top seed, Hermantown, in the Class A semifinals Friday.
