The two-time defending State Class 2A champion Edina held off a late rally from Bemidji to hold on for a 6-4 quarterfinal victory Thursday.

It was Bemidji's first state hockey tournament appearance since 1986. Interestingly enough it wasn't the first time the two have met during the state hockey tournament. According to the Star Tribune, Edina beat Bemidji 6-0 in the 1974 state championship.

Matt Masterman finished with a pair of goals, while nine different Hornets tallied points in the victory. Rocky Copiskey had a goal and two assists for Bemidji.

Edina took control early building a 3-0 lead in the first period, but things changed early in the second as the Lumberjacks cut the Edina lead to one and the battle was on.

After the Hornets pushed the lead back to three at 5-2, Bemidji again trimmed it to one on Josh Lusby's goal at the 16:05 mark of the third. Edina answered back with an empty-net goal from Casey Dornbach less than a minute later.

Edina advances to the semifinals on Friday where they will meet Duluth East.

Duluth East survives in overtime

The Duluth East Greyhounds rallied from a three-goal deficit in the third period to beat St. Thomas Academy 6-5 in overtime during the quarterfinals of the Class 2A Boys Hockey Tournament.

It was Peterson's second goal of the game, the other was the first of the three-goal third period rally. Peterson also had an assist in the game.

The game was tied up at one after the first period. The Panthers rattled off three unanswered goals between the second and third periods.

Jack Poehling scored a pair of goals to help lead the Panthers' to the victory – his 35th and 36th goals of the season.

The Panthers will face Eden Prairie in the semifinals.

Eden Prairie rides four goal second period to quarterfinal victory

Eden Prairie broke open their quarterfinal matchup with Blaine with a four-goal second period on their way to a 5-3 victory over Blaine.

Casey Mittelstadt and Michael Graham each scored a pair of goals to lead the Eagles to the victory. Marc Sullivan added a pair of assists.

The Bengals scored two in the third period to cut the Eden Prairie lead in half, but couldn't get any closer.

The Eagles outshot Blaine 31-14.
