State Hockey: Stillwater, Wayzata, Eden Prairie, Grand Rapids advance in 2A

The Class 2A boys' state hockey tournament is underway with quarterfinal games throughout the day at the Xcel Energy Center.

The tournament started Wednesday with Class 1A, those recaps are available right here.

Stillwater 4, Farmington 1

The second-seeded Ponies (27-1-1) got a pair of goals from Jackson Cates and one each from his brother Noah Cates and Luke Manning en route to reaching the state semifinals for the first time in school history.

Farmington didn't score until Erik Holmstrom scored on a power play with 7.4 seconds left in the game.

Farmington will head to the consolation bracket while Stillwater faces Wayzata tomorrow in the semi-finals.

Wayzata 3, Burnsville 1

While Burnsville went up early on a goal from Cade Borchardt with 45 seconds left in the first, they couldn't hold off a second-period surge from Wayzata. Mark Senden and Luke Paterson scored back-to-back goals early in the second to put the Trojans on top before Dillon Riley scored one more to end the frenzy.

Burnsville will play Farmington in tomorrow consolation tournament.

Eden Prairie 7, Anoka 3

Nicky Leivermann had a pair of goals and Casey Mittelstadt had five assists as Eden Prairie blasted Anoka 7-3 in the Class 2A quarterfinals. Mittelstadt added a goal to finish the night with six points.

Michael Talbot had a hat trick in the loss for Anoka.

Grand Rapids 3, Bemidji 2 ot

Alex Adams goal in overtime broke a tie and locked up a 3-2 victory for Grand Rapids in the 2A quarterfinals.

Gavin Hain added a goal and an assist for the Thunderhawks in the victory, while Micah Miller scored Grand Rapids' other goal in the win.

Alex Pollock had a pair of goals in the loss for Bemidji.

Grand Rapids will meet up with Eden Prairie in the 2A semifinals Friday.
