It's easily one of the all-time great comebacks in football history.

Impossible didn't exist Thursday night in the opening round of the Class 6A high school football state tournament.

Trailing 27-10 with just over a minute left in the fourth quarter, Maple Grove defeated the odds by scoring three touchdowns in a back-from-the-dead win over St. Michael-Albertville.

Final score: 29-27.

Here are the highlights from the final 59 seconds.

Here's how it happened

Maple Grove got the football with 4:30 left in the game and marched down the field where they faced a fourth down at the STMA 17-yard line. All the Knights had to do was get one more stop and the game was over, but Maple Grove quarterback Curtis Haugen connected with Joe Raymon for a 17-yard touchdown, making it 27-16 with 59 seconds left.

The Crimson's extra-point attempt was blocked, so it was still looking grim for Maple Grove.

After a perfect onside kick, Maple Grove scored on the very next play when Raymon caught a pass at the 34 and burned everyone down the sideline for a 49-yard touchdown. They went for 2 but failed.

So with 46 seconds to play the game was still pretty much impossible to win, with Maple Grove down 27-22 and 46 seconds on the clock.

Of course, another perfect onside kick was recovered by Maple Grove at the STMA 49.

The Crimson had a first down at the 23-yard line, but a false start penalty backed them up to the 28 with just 16 seconds left on the clock.

No problem.

On the next play, Haugen connected with Raymon for 27 yards down to the STMA 1-yard line. Raymon, who finished with 10 catches and 158 yards, made the leaping catch between five defenders.

The Crimson hurried to the line and spiked the ball to stop the clock with 7 seconds remaining.

One play later, Evan Holl took a handoff and went untouched off left tackle for the game-winning touchdown with 4 seconds left.
