A Vikings fixture on the field and behind the scenes since the late 1970s is calling it a day.

Scott Studwell is stepping down as the team's director of college scouting after 12 years on the job, the Daily Norseman reports.

Studwell, who was a linebacker with the Vikings from 1977 to 1990 and served in two other front office positions before his college scouting job, resigned Sunday – one day after the team completed its most recent draft. The Daily Norseman says Studwell left his job to spend more time with his family and cut down on the travel time associated with being a scout.

Studwell, 59, was named NFC Scout of the Year in 2012. He will be replaced by Jamaal Stephenson, who has been the Vikings' assistant director of college scouting since 2009.

Vikings general manager Rick Spielman says Studwell will remain with the team in a "smaller capacity," the blog reports.

According to the Star Tribune, Spielman said the team "will definitely carve out a role where he will be still a major part of this draft process."

Studwell was the Vikings' ninth-round draft choice and 250th pick overall in the 1977 NFL Draft. He played in two NFL Pro Bowls, in 1987 and 1988.
