Team USA is looking for kids who'd be good at the luge

The nationwide slider search will be in Minnesota this weekend.

The U.S. luge team is looking for new members, and there will be an event this weekend in Minnesota to find some.

USA Luge and White Castle are hosting a slider search for kids ages 9-13 at Riverside Park in Minneapolis on Sept. 9-10.

U.S. Olympic and National Team coaches and athletes will teach kids the basics of riding a luge sled, then once they've got the hang of it they'll take runs down a paved luge course using a luge sled with wheels. There will also be some fitness tests.

Kids who show some natural skills will be invited to a try out a real luge at a USA Luge-sanctioned training site in New York, Utah or Michigan.

The top athletes will then be picked for next year's USA Luge Junior Development Team. Those who do well could end up becoming a member of the U.S. National and/or Olympic luge teams.

The slider search program got started in 1985, and since then it has introduced the sport of luge to 25,000 kids, including some who went on to win Olympic medals.

How do you sign up?

To participate, sign up for one clinic (they're two or three hours) by calling 1-800-USA-LUGE or filling out this online registration form

The event is free, and anyone who participates gets a White Castle USA Luge Slider Search T-shirt.
