The Fabulous Five: Minnesota's best prep stories

Forget the rankings and games of the week, BringMeTheNews is taking your high school winter sports season one step further with a weekly list we're calling "The Fabulous Five." We focus on five great storylines every week, and version 1.0 doesn't disappoint.

Hey, it's Tiny Joe Nelson from FM 100.3 KFAN. I cover high school sports all season long, and I'm glad to be a part of our prep sports coverage during the winter sports season here at BringMeTheNews. Instead of throwing up rankings, we are taking this one step further by putting together my weekly "fabulous five" sports stories. Check back every Monday night for updates.

Preamble out of the way, here are this week's Fab Five:

5. Philip Nelson named Mr. Football
He's an unbelievable high school talent, and according to many he'll be an unbelievable college talent when he suits up with the Golden Gophers next season. Nelson capped his prep career by taking home the Mr. Football award.

4. Burnsville Blaze pull another upset
Burnsville's boys hockey team is pretty good every year. This year they were flying under the radar before a couple of huge upsets. First they knocked off Hill-Murray, but their latest win came against No. 2 Benilde-St. Margaret's -- and they blew the Red Knights off the ice.

3. Mitch Bengston breaks wrestling record
The St. Cloud Apollo senior set a state record with his 142nd consecutive win. The 132-pound junior hasn't lost since eighth grade. His career record is 184-5.

2. Battle of No. 1s: Hopkins vs. Benilde-St. Margaret's
It won't get much better than this. Both boy's basketball teams are ranked No. 1 in the state. Hopkins is at the top of class 4A and the Red Knights are No. 1 in class 3A. Fans going to watch this game Friday night will have an opportunity to see six to seven Division I players.

1. One clap for Zach -- he's back

You won't find more heart-warming story than the one Zach Gabbard can tell. The Perham senior has been cleared to start playing basketball again, and he is expected to join his team soon. Gabbard collapsed on the court last January after suffering sudden cardiac arrest. His team won the class 2A state championship last spring, and played with a "one clap for Zach" theme all year.

What do you think? Have a better prep story than these? Then bring it!
