St. Cloud: High school officials in high demand

There's a shortage of high school officials and referees in Minnesota. For example, in the St. Cloud area, there are 70 officials for spring sports – which can be problematic on days when 25-30 sporting events are scheduled. One longtime official said the state high school league's main office may as well have a "Help Wanted" sign in front of it.

Alma, WI: Rochester man snags huge sturgeon

Avery Rivera, a 20-year-old from Rochester, reeled in a monstrous sturgeon while fishing the Mississippi River on May 17. An hour-long fight to reel in the sturgeon culminated with him tossing it back into the water (per fishing guidelines), but he estimates the sturgeon was nearly six-feet long and weight 60-70 pounds.

Hawley: Future college football player dominates the diamond

Jordan Harms is a five-year varsity baseball player for Hawley High School, a Class 2A team looking for a return trip to the state tournament. Harms will play safety on Minnesota State-Moorhead's football team next fall, but for now he's crushing the competition on the baseball field. In 36 innings pitched, the right-hander has allowed just nine hits while striking out 79. He's also hitting a robust .482 with 3 home runs.
