The Miracurl on Ice: Team USA wins gold

They won five straight to clinch the improbable gold.

A better story couldn't have been written about the United States men's curling team, which once again found a way to come up big in the clutch with a 10-7 win over Sweden to win the gold medal at the PyeongChang Olympics on Saturday.

It's the first gold medal for the US in the event.

Tied 5-5 in the eighth, Minnesota native John Shuster came up with a giant knockout that scored five points, giving the US the commanding lead with just two ends to go.

Of the team's five members, four of them are Minnesota natives.

John Shuster (Chisholm/Superior, WI), Tyler George (Duluth), John Landsteiner (Mankato/Duluth) and Joe Polo (Cass Lake/Duluth) are the Minnesotans. Matt Hamilton, the guy with the awesome mustache, is from Wisconsin.

Team Minnesota ... erm ... USA, is dominating the Olympics

The United States had no business even playing in the gold medal game. Entering round robin play on Monday, the U.S. was 2-4 and all but mathematically eliminated from the medal round.

On Monday, they were supposed to lose to world power Canada. Instead, Team Shuster won 11-9 in extra ends, thus keeping their Olympic dreams alive.

Next day: an upset victory over another world power, Switzerland.

Wednesday: a third consecutive must-win victory, this time over Great Britain in dominating fashion.

Just like that, the U.S. went from three nails in the coffin to a spot in the semifinals – and another matchup against Team Canada.

Beating Canada twice in row? Nearly impossible... for mere mortals.

Team Shuster trailed late in the game before stealing two points in the eighth end, and went on to win 5-3 to clinch a spot in the gold-medal game.

The rest... it's history. To some, it's legendary.
