Want to go to Super Bowl 52 in Minneapolis without paying thousands of dollars for a ticket?

Just kidding, it's not going to happen, even though the NFL announced on Thursday it's giving away 500 free tickets to its February showpiece that will be held at U.S. Bank Stadium.

It's the first time ever that the NFL has done this, but the chances of a typical football fan getting their hands on one are slim to none.

That said, those lucky enough to go will at least be deserving of their tickets, with the league saying they will be given to fans identified as "exemplifying the heart of their team spirit," with others going to outstanding youth football coaches and "community heroes."

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell started the giveaway in Minneapolis at Sunday's game between the Vikings and Packers. He was joined by Vikings receiver Stefon Diggs to present tickets to the entire Phelps Falcons 8th grade football team and their coaches.

The Falcons are a nonprofit youth sports organization for boys and girls aged 5-15 in south Minneapolis, to which volunteers give more than 10,000 hours a year of their time

For future ticket giveaways, 256 of the 500 available will be given out by NFL clubs – 8 tickets per club – with a further 64 being selected by nominees of the Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award.

The rest will be given out by the NFL, with the league saying fans will be surprised during tailgates, at stadiums and even inside their own homes.

Only a fraction of tickets for the Super Bowl have gone on sale, and the cheapest right now on Stubhub is a shade under $3,300.

More will be released, including cheaper ones (ie. hundreds, not thousands, of dollars), when we know which teams are in the Super Bowl, with each team getting a set number of tickets to sell to their own fans.

So Vikings fans will just have to wait till then...
