The Twins' division gets a spot in the World Series

With Cleveland's win, the central division keeps its grip on the American League championship.

Sure, the Twins had the 30th best record in the majors this season. But they're a little more closely associated with the World Series now that the winners of their division – the Cleveland Indians – have earned a spot in the fall classic.

It's a little like saying "No, we weren't at the Prince tribute concert but we know someone who was."

Cleveland became the American League champs by beating the Blue Jays 3-0 in Toronto Wednesday. With the victory the Central Division winners claimed the series, 4 games to 1.

This is the Indians' first trip to the World Series since 1997. The last time they actually won it was back in 1948.

What – you don't remember that?

Somebody does.

Baseball experts might tell you that to win an October playoff series you need veteran pitching.

That memo apparently didn't make it to Cleveland, though, because the guy who took the mound for the Indians Wednesday, Ryan Merritt, was making only his second start in the big leagues (two of the team's regular starting pitchers are out with injuries).

Merritt was lifted in the fifth inning even though he'd allowed no runs. Manager Terry Francona has the Indians riding the strength of their bullpen, typical of a team that has no big superstars and succeeds because of a group effort, USA Today says.

We're still waiting to see who the National League will send to the World Series.

The L.A. Dodgers and Chicago Cubs are playing Game 4 in their best-of-seven championship series Wednesday night. The Dodgers hold a 2-1 lead in the series.
