The Twins have the best offense in baseball since mid-June

Baseball's summer break is here. And with the arrival of the All-Star break, the Minnesota Twins are showing signs of life and even optimism.

There is renewed excitement at Target Field now that the Twins have reeled off seven wins in the last ten games and 12 of 20 overall. Those games have been spurred by an offense that's delivered 140 runs since June 19th – the most in the league in that time. Young players such as Max Kepler, Miguel Sano and Kennys Vargas are giving fans hope that Minnesota's rocky first half will give way to improved play.

Since June 19:

  • Max Kepler has 26 RBIs
  • Brian Dozier has 7 homers and 18 RBIs
  • Eduardo Nunez has 27 hits in 20 games
  • Miguel Sano returned from the DL on July 1 and has 3 homers and 9 RBIs
  • Eddie Rosario is hitting .387 since getting called back up July 3
  • Kennys Vargas was called up July 4 and is hitting .471 with 8 hits (5 doubles, 3 homers)
  • Joe Mauer is hitting .333 in July after hitting just .223 in June

The Twins, at 32 wins and 56 losses, still own one of the worst records in baseball. Twenty games behind AL Central leading Cleveland, the Twins would have to win 49 of their remaining 74 games to break even at 81-81 for the season. Just playing .500 baseball for the second half will secure the Twins a record of 69-93.

Then there's the trade deadline. Will the Twins throw in the postseason towel and trade valuable players for young and promising talent? Trade winds are reportedly swirling around pitcher Ervin Santana, third baseman Trevor Plouffe and other players.

The deadline for trades this season is Aug. 1.
