Timberwolves to honor Waseca, Marshall for Thursday's epic game

From the pages of BringMeTheNews to SportsCenter to the New York Times and even Good Morning America, it seemed everyone was talking about a Minnesota high school basketball game on Friday: the Section 2AAA boys championship with that crazy finish between Waseca and Marshall.

In a game that some have titled "The Three Miracles of St. Peter," it took four overtimes, three buzzer beaters and an unbelievable finish for Waseca to beat fellow Big South Conference member Marshall 103-100 and lock up a spot in the state basketball tournament.

While the game has ended and Waseca has moved on to state, both teams are still reveling in the emotions of what happened Thursday night.

After meeting in a conference championship game in mid-February (which Marshall won) and in Thursday night's epic Waseca win, the teams will share a court one more time this season – but it won't be for a rubber match.

Instead, Marshall Radio reports that both are headed to Target Center Saturday night, where they will be honored by the Timberwolves during the game against the Brooklyn Nets.

The biggest buzzer beater of the night was the one that came from Waseca senior Nick Dufault as he drilled a 75-footer to force the fourth o-t.

"It was so surreal," said Dufault to the Wascea County News. "I don't know how else to put it, I'm so thankful."

The shot was improbable after Marshall made a free throw to go up by three. The Blue Jays inbounded to their senior leader, who admitted he just chucked it and prayed.

"When you're down 3, there's really nothing else you can do in that moment," Dufault said. "It's meant to be, I guess."

Cole Streich then put the game away with his buzzer beating three to win it, and history was made.
