TMZ: Boogaard's parents sue NHL Player's Association for $9.8 million
The parents of former Minnesota Wild player Derek Boogaard are suing the NHL Player's Association for $9.8 million after the union failed to help them claim the remainder of Boogaard's multi-million dollar contract, TMZ reports.
Boogaard's parents say the NHLPA promised to help them file a grievance to get their son's team, the New York Rangers, to pay out the rest of his 4-year contract. The lawsuit claims the union failed to file by the deadline, so the Boogaards cannot collect.
Boogaard's parents are requesting $4.8 million from the league plus $5 million in punitive damages, TMZ says.
In a statement to the Associated Press, the NHLPA says: "We have not been served with or seen a copy of the complaint, but we are confident that there is no meritorious claim that can be made against the NHLPA in regard to Derek's tragic death."
Boogaard died last year after an accidental overdose of narcotic painkillers and alcohol.
