Tommies win in St. Peter, but lose quarterback

St. Thomas defeated Gustavus, but O'Connell taken off with injury

St. Thomas defeated Gustavus 20-13 on Saturday afternoon, but they lost their starting quarterback Matt O'Connell.

St. Thomas led 7-6 at the half, a blocked extra point was the difference after 30 minutes.

Sophomore Alex Fenske came on to throw two touchdowns in the second half for St. Thomas. He connected with Nick Waldvogel on a 19 yard touchdown pass, then found Cole Kelly with 5:48 to play on an 11 yard strike.

It was a day controlled by the defense, St. Thomas was held to 225 yards of total offense, but the Tommy defense was up for the challenged as they held Gustavus to just 170 total yards, and just 20 yards rushing.

Tremayne Williams played role in that Tommy defense. He finished with 8 tackles, 7 solo, and 2.5 for loss. He also had 1.5 sacks and intercepted a pass in the game.

St. Thomas (4-1) plays at Bethel next Saturday. Gustavus (3-2) they play out of conference next week at Valley City State.

Bethel runs up points early cruises by Concordia

Bethel had the offense in attack mode early as they rattled off four touchdowns in the first half, taking a 28-0 lead, before cruising to a 45-22 win over Concordia in Moorhead.

Bethel put up 523 yards of offense in the game, 299 through the air, and 224 on the ground as they picked up the win to remain unbeaten.

Erik Peterson was efficient again for Bethel he completed 18 of 27for 299 yards and a touchdown passing. Peterson also added a rushing touchdown. While the running game also was working, Brandon Marquardt rushed for 117 yards and a touchdown as well on the afternoon. Jesse Phenow also found the end zone twice in the game.

Concordia quarterback Griffin Neal did his damage throwing for 212 yards and two touchdowns, while rushing for 93 yards and a third, but he was intercepted twice. Concordia's offense turned it over on three of their first four offensive possessions in the game.

Bethel (5-0) hosts St. Thomas Saturday in a huge game. Concordia (4-1) plays at Hamline.

Turnovers trip up Augsburg at St. Johns

Five lost fumbles and two interceptions were enough to ruin Augsburg's trip to Collegeville on Saturday. The Johnnies won 30-28 in what was a sloppy football game on both sides.

St. Johns fumbled it six times themselves, but recovered half of them.

Sam Sura rushed for 86 yards and two scores in the game for the Johnnies, who won despite being out gained by nearly 200 yards. Jakob Certeza also rushed for 54 yards and a touchdown.

Matt Workman forced a fumble and intercepted a pass in the game for the Johnnies.

Ayrton Scott threw for 304 yards and two touchdowns, he was also intercepted twice. Jerise Washington also rushed for 130 yards and two scores for Augsburg.

St. Johns (5-1) plays at Carlton on Saturday. Augsburg (3-2) plays at St. Olaf.
