State Hockey: Day 1 in the books, Class A semifinals set

Day one of the 2014 Boys' Hockey State Tournament is in the books. In Class A, the tournament opened when No. 2-seed Hermantown defeated unseeded Luverne, 6-3 in the quarterfinal round of the Class 1A bracket.

Nate Pionk scored a pair of goals and the game-winner was credited to Luke Jacques, whose second-period goal put the Hawks on top by a score of 4-2. Hermantown advances to play the winner of the game currently in progress between No. 3-seed New Prague and Chisago Lakes. The loss is the first in regulation this season for Luverne (27-1-1).

New Prague overpowers Chisago Lakes

In their first ever appearance in the high school hockey tournament the New Prague Trojans were too strong for Chisago Lakes, winning 5-2 on Wednesday.

Trailing 1-0 in the first, the Trojans (22-4-3) rallied to score five unanswered goals and build a four-goal lead before the Wildcats netted another goal.

After pulling even at one, New Prague rattled off three goals in a span of 2:38 in the second period to create some space.

The Trojans top line of Seniors Austin Isaacson and Seth Kriha along with Sophomore Alex Gregor combined to tally 13 points. Isaacson had a goal and four assists, Gregor had two goals and three assists and Kriha scored twice and had an assist.

William Knaak put Chisago Lakes (20-9) on the scoreboard in the first. Blake Lizotte scored a power play goal in the third to cut the Trojan lead to three but it didn't get any closer.

East Grand Forks Advances

The East Grand Forks Green Wave overwhelmed Orono 5-1 on Wednesday night in the Class A Hockey tournament.

The Green Wave (25-2-1) came into the tournament as the favorite and they proved to be dominant, in the first round. They outshot Orono in the game 29-14 in the game, and controlled the ice in the first period.

East Grand Forks' Tanner Tweeten scored a pair of goals, in the first. He got credit for one goal that was put in by an Orono player, but then added his second goal of the game with 1:45 left in the period.

Dixon Bowmen added a goal and an assist for the Green Wave, while Colton Poolman picked up three assists on the night.

St. Cloud Cathedral escapes with first round O-T win

St. Cloud Cathedral picked up a 4-3 win over Totino-Grace in the last game of the night in the State Class A hockey tournament. The Crusaders' Erik Gadbois scored on a power play in overtime to win the game for St. Cloud Cathedral.

St. Cloud's Matt Fritz had a big game, he finished with two goals and an assist.

After taking an early, 1-0 lead on Fritz's first goal of the game, Totino-Grace responded with three unanswered goals. Two of those three goals were netted by Joey Brey.

Fritz cut the Totino-Grace lead to one with his goal at 3-2 in the second period. Lommel scored a power play goal late in the second to tie the game at three.

A scoreless third period forced overtime and then Gadbois put the game away in o-t.
