Triple Crown winner American Pharoah has MN connection

American Pharoah's dominating run to the Triple Crown at Belmont Park on Saturday established the horse as one of the all-time greats, and its roots can be tracked all the way back to Minnesota.

According to Sid Hartman of the Star Tribune, American Pharoah's great-grandfather was Unbridled, the horse owned by Bloomington's Frances Genter that went on to win the 1990 Kentucky Derby.

Canterbury Park president and CEO Randy Sampson explained to Hartman: “So [Unbridled] actually ran at Canterbury as a 2-year-old and then won the Derby and the Breeder’s Cup [in 1990] and is now the direct male lineage to our new Triple Crown winner American Pharoah.”

Unbridled was not bred in Minnesota; it only raced here.

Genter was 92-years-old when Unbridled won the Derby. This video shows her reaction in the stands at Churchill Downs during the 1990 Run for the Roses as Unbridled's trainer provides play-by-play during the race.

Genter died two years after her horse won the Derby, according to the New York Times. She was born in Pennsylvania before moving to the Twin Cities, where she went on to graduate from the University of Minnesota.
