Twins' bats fall silent as A's win series opener, 3-1

The Twins did plenty of scoring on Saturday and scored enough to win Sunday.

But their holiday weekend ended with a whimper at the plate on the Fourth of July, when Minnesota managed just four hits off the Oakland Athletics on the way to a 3-1 loss.

A's starting pitcher Kendall Graveman worked into the seventh inning, allowing only three hits.

The Twins got a solid start from Ricky Nolasco, as well, and they headed into the seventh inning with a 1-0 lead.

But Oakland scored all three of their runs in the seventh. Former Twin Danny Valencia started things with a leadoff double.

Valencia then took third on a ground ball to shortstop, with the Star Tribune noting that Eduardo Nunez's throw seemed to beat the runner, but the replay showed third baseman Miguel Sano's tag was just a little late. Stephen Vogt then singled home Valencia and Coco Crisp later hit a two-run single.

The game marked the first big league start of the season for Kennys Vargas, who played first base and hit fifth for the Twins. Vargas was called up from Rochester earlier in the day when Trevor Plouffe returned to the disabled list with a fractured rib.

Two lefthanders will be pitching Tuesday night at Target Field. The Twins' Tommy Milone (0-2) will go up against his former team, while Oakland sends Sean Manaea (3-4) to the mound.
