Twins beat Cleveland for Gardenhire's 1,000th win

The Minnesota Twins defeated the Cleveland Indians 7-3 Saturday afternoon, giving manager Ron Gardenhire his 1,000th career victory. He is the 60th manager in major league history to reach that milestone, and only the eighth manager since 1961 to reach it while managing with just one team, according to the Minnesota Twins.

Gardenhire and his predecessor, Tom Kelly, are the only 1,000-win managers in club history.

Gardenhire hugged his coaches as the game ended, and then hugged each player as they came off the field, the Star Tribune reports.

His wife, Carol, was also at the game to help celebrate the accomplishment, according to the Pioneer Press.

Kyle Gibson pitched five innings and allowed only one run in his season debut with the Twins.

Brian Dozier led off the game with a home run, and the Twins added two more first-inning runs to provide Gibson with a lead he never gave up.

The Twins play Cleveland again Sunday afternoon before returning to Minneapolis for their home opener Monday at Target Field against the Oakland A's.
