Twins blast four homers in 10-1 beatdown of Yankees to open series

The Twins put on a show for the home crowd Friday, stunning the New York Yankees with a 10 - 1 win. Minnesota used a healthy mix of hitting and pitching to earn the blowout victory.

The game started with a bang as Miguel Sano slugged a two-run homer in the first. Sano's third homer in his young big-league career came just about a week after he sprained his ankle in Oakland, reports.

It was the first of four home runs the Twins would hit on the night. Trevor Plouffe went three-for-four and added a homer, as did Brian Dozier - his 21st of the season, according to the Star Tribune.

Two Twins climbed higher up the ladder in the franchise record books during the onslaught. Torii Hunter tied Kirby Puckett for sixth place on the team's home run list by hitting his 207th as a Twin. In addition, Joe Mauer tied Tony Oliva with his 329th double.

Twins' starting pitcher Phil Hughes turned in seven shutout innings against his former team. He improved to 9 -6, giving up only seven hits and struck out three.

With the win, the Twins climb to 5 1/2 games behind the division-leading Kansas City Royals. Minnesota is now 52-44 overall, improving to a 32-16 at home.

The Twins play the Eastern Division leaders, the Yankees, again Saturday in game two of the three-game series. Game starts at 6:10 p.m.

Tommy Milone takes the mound for the Twins. He'll try to bounce back from a rough start in which he gave up seven runs, five earned, in just under three innings. Overall, he is 5-2 with a 3.38 ERA.
