Twins blast Red Sox in Grapefruit League opener

The Minnesota Twins won their opening game in Grapefruit League action, beating the Boston Red Sox Friday afternoon, 8-2.

Twins starter Mike Pelfrey worked two solid innings. He held the Red Sox to no runs and one hit, while on the mound. Brian Duensing worked a perfect third inning and struck out one to get the win. Samuel Deduno struck out three in two innings of work.

"It's fun," Pelfrey said after the game. "You get excited. The adrenaline starts going again and that competitiveness comes back.

The loss for Boston went to Dalier Hinojosa, he was hit hard giving up four hits and three runs in the three run third and fourth innings for the Twins.

Highly touted Red Sox prospect Anthony Ranaudo was dazzling in his first performance against Major League hitters. Ranaudo struck out struck out four of the six batters he faced.

Chris Colabello doubled and drove in two runs for the Twins. Trevor Plouffe finished 1-2 with 2 RBI.

Other notes, in their return to Twins uniforms things didn't go well for either Jason Kubel or Jason Bartlett. Kubel was in the lineup as a designated hitter he went 0-3 with three strikeouts. Bartlett started at shortstop, he was 0-3 with a pair of strikeouts.

Byron Buxton was 1-2 on Friday.

Scott Diamond will start for the Twins Saturday in their home opener against the Red Sox.
