Reports: Twins calling up top prospect Miguel Sano

The Twins are calling up 22-year-old slugger Miguel Sano from Class AA Chattanooga, according to multiple reports Wednesday afternoon.

MLB.com was the first to report the news that Sano, one of the top prospects in the minor leagues, will join the Twins Thursday when they begin a four-game series in Kansas City.

He will replace first baseman/designated hitter Kennys Vargas on the roster; Vargas was optioned to Chattanooga after Wednesday's 2-1 loss to the Reds.

The Twins have not yet confirmed the report, but sports reporters are assuming it's a done deal.

MLB.com notes that Sano was not in the lineup for Chattanooga's Wednesday night game.

The Star Tribune says the Twins could use his offensive power, since they've been struggling of late at the plate.

Sano has hit .329 with six home runs and 17 RBIs in the month of June, according to the Star Tribune. He got off to a slow start in May, however, getting back into the swing of things after missing all of last season rehabbing from Tommy John surgery on his right elbow.

Sano has been playing third base in the minors but his defensive skills still need work, according to CBS Sports. With Trevor Plouffe starting at third, MLB.com speculates that Sano will be used as a designated hitter.

Sano is the second of the Twins' two top prospects to make it to the majors. Outfielder Byron Buxton was called up in June and played in 11 games before suffering a thumb injury on June 26 and going on the disabled list.

The Star Tribune says the Twins signed Sano, a native of the Dominican Republican, for $3.1 million in 2009, when he was just 16 years old.
