Twins calling up Alex Meyer, he'll pitch out of the bullpen

Alex Meyer is being called up by the Minnesota Twins and he'll join the team for their upcoming 10-game road trip, which begins Friday in Milwaukee.

The 6-foot-9 pitcher was acquired as a starter in a trade that sent ex-Twins outfielder Denard Span to the Washington Nationals. But Meyer's role with Minnesota, for now, will be as a relief pitcher.

Meyer has been a starter in the Twins' minor league system since the trade, and he began this season at Triple-A Rochester in the starting rotation; but a disastrous start to his season forced the club to move him to the bullpen. Since being removed from the rotation, Meyer has been nearly untouchable.

Twins manager Paul Molitor hinted Tuesday at the possibility of Meyer getting the call.

"Reports are really good. Throwing it over, throwing it hard, using his offspeed pitches," Molitor said, according to 1500 ESPN. "So I think that, obviously, when we talk about people that might help us, his name is going to come up, invariably. You always proceed cautiously."

Meyer had a 7.09 ERA as a starter after the first six weeks of the season. Despite his demotion to the 'pen, the Twins still see Meyer as a future starting pitcher.

General Manager Terry Ryan told Fox Sports North that the only thing preventing Meyer from starting is the high number of walks he's issued. But he's walked only six since being moved to the bullpen.
