Twins finally score, but Tigers complete the sweep

The Twins' woes at the plate and on the mound continued in Detroit Thursday, as the Tigers beat Minnesota 7-1 to complete their three-game sweep to open the season.

The Twins finally ended their scoreless innings streak after Joe Mauer and Kennys Vargas put together back-to-back hits and Yoenis Cespedes misplayed the ball to allowing Mauer to score from first in the seventh inning, end Minnesota's season-opening scoreless streak at 24 innings.

But by the time they scored the Twins were already down 7-0.

According to the Associated Press, the streak set a modern day American League record – breaking the mark held by the 1947 Chicago White Sox.

Twins pitcher Kyle Gibson didn't fare much better than Wednesday's starter, Ricky Nolasco. Gibson lasted just 3 2/3 innings and gave up six runs on eight hits, while walking a career-high five.

J.D. Martinez highlighted the Tigers afternoon with a two-run homer in the fourth inning that opened the game up. Anthony Gose was 3-for-5 with three runs scored.

The Twins head to Chicago to open a weekend series against the White Sox. Tommy Milone takes the mound on Friday for Minnesota against Hector Noesi.
