Twins GM: Pitching prospect Jose Berrios will not be called up

Twins general manager Terry Ryan closed the door on any chance of highly touted pitching prospect Jose Berrios reaching the Majors this month.

Ryan told reporters before Wednesday night's game that the 21-year-old will not be called up this month.

Berrios has thrown 161 1/3 innings between Class Double-A Chattanooga and Triple-A Rochester, which is more than the number of innings he threw the entire last season.

Berrios had an outstanding August with the Red Wings – owning a 2.03 ERA and a 48-3 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 40 innings pitched. During the month, opposing hitters batted just .203 against him.

Despite numbers like that and a team in contention for the playoffs, the Twins have chosen not to call Berrios up.

According to the blog Off the Baggy, the Twins could have called Berrios up now in September and had him begin 2016 in the minors, saving themselves the year of control.

Ryan's words Wednesday seem to run against what Twins manager Paul Molitor told reporters on Tuesday. Molitor said the team hadn't closed the door on calling up Berrios and that the young righty was still in the mix.

However, Wednesday Ryan indicated the team never was seriously considering the move.

So the plan will be for Berrios to make his final start with Rochester, then be sent home for the remainder of the season. So Twins fans will have to wait until next year before they'll see these kinds of swings and misses at Target Field.
