Twins in need of starting rotation makeover

In 2012 the Twins' starting rotation had an American League worst 5.40 earned run average.

That's why the team made a point to add starting pitching depth in the offseason. The Twins signed Kevin Correia and Mike Pelfrey in free agency and acquired Vance Worley in a trade with the Phillies. Here's how it's resulted so far...

Kevin Correia: 4-3, 3.35 ERA
Mike Pelfrey: 3-4, 6.57 ERA
Vance Worley: 1-4 6.20 ERA

Clearly, Correia has been good, but Pelfrey and Worley have been shaky at best.

Minnesota's starting rotation has put together a 5.32 ERA this season -- third worst in the American League and just slightly better than the 2012 rotation.

The Twins are also last in the AL in innings pitched by starters, which helps explain why the team demoted starter Pedro Hernandez on Monday and called up reliever Caleb Thielbar.

The Star Tribune reports that Thielbar could be sent back to the minors for a starter to be called up in time for a game Friday in Detroit. Three names to watch for the call include Kyle Gibson, P.J. Walters and Sam Deduno.
