Rod Carew, a legend of the Minnesota Twins, is working to get healthy again after having a heart attack, and is hopeful for an eventual transplant.

The Hall of Famer spoke with Sports Illustrated about the attack, saying it happened days before his 70th birthday (Oct. 1) while on the golf course.

The story, which described the heart attack as "massive," says:

" When he woke in the ER at Riverside Community Hospital—to more paddles, and more shouts of 'Don’t lose him!'—Carew closed his eyes again. 'I decided to go to sleep,' he says softly. 'And I didn’t know if I’d wake up.'

He underwent a six-hour open-heart surgery, which installed a Left Ventricular Assist Device (LVAD) that now pumps blood for him, Sports Illustrated writes. And he's now working on getting healthy enough to get on the heart transplant list.

The Twins,

" target="_blank">in a tweet Monday afternoon, said the organization's thoughts are with the Carew family.

Carew was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1991 – the 27th player to get in during the first year of eligibility. He's a career .328 hitter, with 3,053 hits, seven batting titles and 18 All-Star Game selections.

He was also an American League MVP and Robert Clemente Award winner in 1977, and AL Rookie of the Year in 1967.

He played with the Twins from 1967-78, then finished his career with the California Angels, retiring in 1985. His jersey, No. 29, was retired by the Twins in 1987 and later by the Angels as well.

His 3,000th career hit actually came against the Twins and pitcher Frank Viola, while Carew was with the Angels.
