Twins offense surges in rout of White Sox

The Minnesota Twins earned a split of their brief two-game series with the Chicago White Sox after beating the Sox 11-4 Wednesday night at Target Field.

It was the first Major League victory for Twins starter Trevor May (1-4). May gave up three runs on six hits in five innings of work to earn the win. He struck out six. It was a big improvement after his last outing in Baltimore when he surrendered eight runs in just over four innings of work.

Another Twins rookie played a big part. Kennys Vargas had another big night. He was 2-for-5 with three RBIs and a tape-measure home run in the game – his second in as many nights.

As a team, the Twins pounded out 19 hits, every Twins starter had a hit and all of them except Jordan Schafer scored a run

Eduardo Nunez had four hits including a triple in the first inning to help the Twins take an early 1-0 lead. The Twins were far from done in the first, as Nunez scored on an infield hit from Joe Mauer, then Oswaldo Arcia delivered a clutch double down the third base line.

May was cruising through the first three innings, but he ran into trouble in the fourth. Dayan Viciedo hit a solo home run to get Chicago on the board. Then the White Sox scored a pair of runs on three singles in the fifth inning to tie the score at three.

The Twins picked up their starter in the bottom half of the inning as Minnesota answered with a five run fifth highlighted by a two-run triple from Eduardo Escobar to give the Twins the lead for good.

The bullpen took over from there, recording the final 12 outs to help May secure his first win.

The Twins open a four-game weekend series with the Angels on Thursday night. Kyle Gibson (11-10) is on the mound for Minnesota.
