Twins offer contracts to 3 ahead of deadline

The Minnesota Twins are making more moves in a busy couple of weeks for the club.

OK, these aren't quite Nolasco or Hughes, but for three Twins another chance is being given to show they can help the new look team.

Pitcher Anthony Swarzak, who was good out of the bullpen last year posting a 3-2 record with a 2.91 ERA, will be tendered a deal to avoid the arbitration deadline of 11 p.m. tonight.

Ditto with Brian Duensing, who won six games in 73 appearances out of the 'pen, just seven off the league lead.

Third baseman Trevor Plouffe, who saw a power dip last year after homering 24 times in 119 games in 2012, will also receive an offer from Minnesota.

The three were the only unsigned players the Twins had left, and this is the first step in avoiding being taken to arbitration by a player for the seventh straight offseason.

Avoiding the Monday deadline gives the players the opportunity to negotiate raises on their 2013 base salaries, though should the sides involved not be able to come to an agreement, an arbitrator would become necessary.
