Twins recall Chris Herrmann, A.J. Achter in roster shakeup

After a disastrous series in Toronto the Minnesota Twins shook up the roster before Friday night's series opener in Cleveland.

The Twins recalled catcher Chris Herrmann and right-handed reliever A.J. Achter from Triple-A Rochester. They also optioned right-hander Tyler Duffey to Rochester and catcher Eric Fryer was designated for assignment.

Herrmann will replace Fryer as the backup catcher behind Kurt Suzuki. Before being sent down to Rochester Herrmann was hitting just .156 with 1 home run and 8 RBIs.

Fryer wasn't doing much better. In fact, he had struck out in 10 of his last 11 MLB at bats.

Achter, 27, made 40 appearances for the Red Wings. He was 4-2 with a 2.82 ERA and had 14 saves. He appeared in seven games with the Twins last year.

Sending Duffey back to Rochester wasn't a surprise. He gave up six runs over two innings in his Major League debut at Toronto, Wednesday night. With an off day Monday, Kyle Gibson will start on normal rest, Tuesday against Texas.

Achter's addition will give the Twins a 9-man bullpen at least until they have to make a roster decision for a starter on Aug. 15 against Cleveland.

The Star Tribune notes that is one day before Tommy Milone is eligible to come off the disabled list.

By designating Fryer for assignment the Twins have opened up a spot on their 40-man roster. According to Twins blogger Rhett Bollinger, they could now choose to call up either right-hander Jose Berrios or lefty Taylor Rogers from Rochester or go with a bullpen day on Aug. 15.
