Twins' slugger Vargas has best first month since DiMaggio

Twins rookie Kennys Vargas has had a terrific first month since joining the Twins. But it might surprise you to find out just how good he's been.

Vargas, 24, debuted with the Twins on Aug. 1, and so far has compiled 38 hits and drove in 24 runs through Aug. 31. He is batting .317 with four home runs as the team opens a series with the Chicago White Sox Tuesday night.

According to the Pioneer Press, the only player to have a better first month in the majors was Yankees outfielder Joe DiMaggio.

The newspaper cites the Elias Sports Bureau for the stats.

DiMaggio, a three time MVP, began his career with 48 hits and 28 RBIs as a rookie in May of 1936. He went on to slug 361 home runs in his 13-year career and his 56-game hitting streak still stands as a major league record.

Vargas has given Twins' fans a reason for optimism in what is looking sure to be another disappointing season. According to Puckett's Pond, while some teams have played a shift on Vargas he has done a good job hitting the ball to all fields.

Vargas hit .281 at Double A New Britain while clubbing 17 home runs and driving in 63 runs.

The Twins hope he can be at the forefront of a much different 2015.
