The Minnesota Twins took the opener of their series with the Cleveland Indians 3-1 Tuesday night at Target Field.

It was the first time this season the Twins were able to beat Indians starter Danny Salazar (13-9). He came into the game 2-0 against Minnesota this year, while striking out 21 of the 46 Twins hitters he had faced.

Minnesota scored all three runs in the third inning off Salazar.

The Twins took the lead in the third when their two-out rally was highlighted by three consecutive extra base hits from Aaron Hicks, Brian Dozier and Joe Mauer.

Twins starter Ervin Santana worked into the eighth inning. He allowed just one run on five hits, while striking out seven in the seven-plus innings of work. He left the game with runners on second and third with no one out.

Glen Perkins got Santana and the Twins out of the jam and didn't allow a run to score. Kevin Jepsen picked up his 13th save.

Hicks was 2-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored. Dozier was 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored as well.

Phil Hughes (10-9) will return to the Twins rotation on Wednesday night. He'll match up with Indians righty Corey Kluber (8-14).
