Diamond dusted by Tigers, 4-2; Detroit's magic number is 1

A barrage of home runs in the fourth inning was all Detroit needed to top the Twins, 4-2 Tuesday night at Target Field.

Scott Diamond (6-12) started for the Twins (66-91) and his night -- except for one inning -- was pretty good.

Let's go to the fourth inning.

Victor Martinez and Omar Infante hit back-to-back home runs off Diamond to start the inning. Three batters later it Austin Jackson liften a homer over the left center wall for a two-run job, and a 4-1 Tigers lead.

That's all the damage Diamond and the Twins would surrender, but it was more than enough against another night of offensive ineptitude for the Twins.

Minnesota scored on an RBI single from Chris Parmelee in the second and a solo home run off the bat of Ryan Doumit in the seventh.

Doug Fister (14-9) picked up the win for Detroit (92-66). He struck out seven over 6 innings.

The Tigers' magic number to clinch the AL Central division is one.

Note: Twins manager Ron Gardenhire remains two wins shy of 1,000 for his career.
