The Twins have announced that starter Scott Baker will miss the 2012 season to surgically repair his right elbow. The flexor pronator tendon in his elbow needs to be fixed, and the recovery time for such an operation is six months.
Scott Baker missed the majority of the final two months last season because of elbow problems, and he missed his scheduled start Thursday because of another sore elbow. Twins GM Terry Ryan says this is a "standard thing that happens to him every spring." Baker is scheduled to throw a bullpen session on Saturday.
In a surprise move, Scott Baker underwent Tommy John surgery on Tuesday. He was supposed to have a different operation to repair a tendon in his right arm, but Dr. David Altcheck saw that Baker needed the more serious operation. Tommy John surgery usually keeps pitchers out 12-18 months.
The Minnesota pitcher continues to recover from elbow tendonitis. The Star Tribune reports Baker would be eligible to return on April 12.
MRI results of Scott Baker's right elbow were similar "structurally" to the right elbow strain that kept Baker out for 18 days last season, according to the Twins. Baker is going to get a second opinion, but according to the Twins, it's unlikely that Baker misses a significant amount of time.
Scott Baker left his rehab start for Class A Fort Myers Thursday night after recording just one out in the first inning. "He couldn’t seem to get loose on the mound and instead of pushing the envelope, we decided we would go get him out of the game", Twins GM Terry Ryan said. Baker will be reevaluated Friday.
