U.S. Racquetball champs crowned at Target Center
It was a smashing good time in downtown Minneapolis Sunday. Nope, we're not talking about what the Vikings did to Arizona, but a unique national event that wrapped up at Target Center.
It was the 2011 U.S. Open Racquetball Championships, with both the men's and women's titles decided Sunday.
In the women's final, Paola Longoria (San Luis Potosi, Mexico) defeated Rhonda Rajsich (Fountain Hills, Ariz.) in straight sets, 11-7, 11-5, 11-9.
The men's main event saw Kane Waselenchuk (Austin, Texas) defeat Rocky Carson (Ladera Ranch, Calif.) in four sets, 7-11, 11-2, 11-4, 11-7.
Waselenchuk hasn't lost a match since January of 2009, and now has a mind-boggling 122-match winning streak.
The smart money always had Kane winning his fifth consecutive title. David Zingler, a writer for the Minnesota Score magazine, interviewed Waselenchuk earlier this week. He writes that as a 5-year-old, Waselenchuk used to beat adults in racquetball tournaments. So, yeah, he's that good.
Last year, BMTN sports anchor Eric Perkins met up with Waselenchuk in one of his "Perk at Play" segments. Very entertaining...
