The United States men's soccer team has made it to the knockout stage of the World Cup. It is the first time the Americans have qualified for that stage in consecutive World Cups.

The U.S. lost to Germany 1-0, but was helped out when Portugal defeated Ghana 2-1.

Germany's Thomas Muller scored in the 55th minute to lift the Germans to the victory.

Germany finished with seven points, while the U.S. and Portugal each had four. But the Americans goal difference was even and Portugal's was minus-3.

President Obama, who was in Minnesota on Thursday, congratulated them on advancing, in the tough group.

The Germans controlled much of the game and took the three-points from the game, with the victory.

But things still worked out for the U.S.

"This is a huge, huge step and now we can't wait until round of 16," said U.S. coach Jurgen Klinsmann. "Everyone said we had no chance, we took the chance and move on. And now we really want to prove a point."

The U.S. will next play against either Belgium or Russia in the next round.
